"Temure"
Dance
Still, we did see some culture, mainly in the form of real Tahitian dancing in Rangiroa at Kia Ora Village. As part of the Tahitian culture, most female favorite past time is the excuse for a three-week long dancing contest, as I learned from my new friend, Luci Martinez. For most of the nights we were in Rangiroa especially over Christmas and New Year festive seasons, you could watch the various teams strut their costumes during a night down at the Kia Ora Village Hotel during dinner. It was rather fun: the way those girls wiggle their hips is enough to make otherwise healthy men get palpitations, and even though the dancing we saw in Rangiroa was more raw and powerful, the Tahitian program of dance, choral ditties and instrumentals was certainly entertaining. Especially when the grass skirts and amazingly ornamental flowers started to fall apart with the vigorous shaking they were getting. |
