PALAU, ATOLLS OF MICRONESIA |

Underwater worldWhen I first visited Palau in October of 1994, I fell in love with it. I had never experienced the wonders of diving the Indo-Pacific Ocean, and the islands were some of the most beautiful I had ever seen. When I left seven short days later, I couldn't stop thinking about Palau. There were so many things I wanted to know, yet little information was readily available. The islands are rich with history and the reefs are home to many exotic creatures - some that are not known to exist anywhere else in the world. Yet few visitors ever realize this. I returned to Palau with my hubby in January of 1996 after my first visit with the intention of writing a dive log. Even considering all the beautiful diving I did while researching about Palau, some of the most memorable moments were talking to the Palauan people about their legends. Yet believe me, words alone cannot fully express the intriguing history, the warmth hospitality of Palauans, the simplicity of their life. Most of all, being one of the most awesome dive site in the world, Palau is famous for their diverse marine life, which is due in part to the islands' proximity the Indo-Malayan region. Most Pacific marine organisms evolved in the triangular area bounded by New Guinea, the Philippines, and the Malay Peninsula. As the distance from this area increases, the number of species decreases. |
